    The City of Thomaston will be hosting the 3rd Annual Chalk Art Competition, as part of the 3rd Annual Thomaston Art & Soul Festival.

    Festival Theme: "Threads of Time"

    18+ Competition- 1st: $250, 2nd: $100, 3rd: $50

    U18 Competition- 1st: $100, 2nd: $50, 3rd: $25

    Judging will take place at 5 P.M. and annoucments will be made shortly thereafter the day of the event!

    Terms & Conditions

    • Artists must bring their own supplies. Only non-oil-based soft chalk/pastels in a solid form may be used for sidewalk painting. Acrylic paints, liquid pastels, oil-based pastels, hard pastels, etc. are not acceptable. No tempera please. All artwork must be able to be washed away.

    • Participants can bring their own pillow, blanket, or cardboard for seating if they wish, seating will not be provided for participants. Participants are responsible for the security of their goods. The Art & Soul Fest Committee and event organizers accept no responsibility for stolen or damaged property, accidents or injury.

    • Participants must remain “within the lines” of their assigned space and not damage the surrounding paintings.

    • Assignment of spaces will be at the discretion of the Art & Soul Fest Committee. Spaces are approximately 3'x3' (you're welcome to go bigger, but work fast!) throughout and surrounding the park. Please plan accordingly.

    • The Art & Soul Fest Committee reserves the right to revoke or refuse to grant space at any time, without recourse by the participant. The Art & Soul Fest Committee shall not be liable to anyone for this action.

    • No spaces will be granted to those wishing to express political or controversial opinions. Commercial advertising messages, business logos, and alcohol/tobacco themes will not be allowed.

    • Images with nudity, vulgar or explicit language or expression are NOT permitted. The Art & Soul Fest Committee reserves the right to deem a painting inappropriate for a family-themed event.

    The Thomaston Art and Soul Ceramic Arts Competition will take place during this year’s Thomaston Art and Soul Festival, Saturday April 20, 2024.

    Competition is open to skilled potters only.

    Competitors must register online by April 14, 2024. All work must be on site at Greatest Generation Park, for exhibit Saturday, April 20th from 8am-6pm.

    All entries to the EXHIBITION categories must be on display for the duration of the Saturday event and all work must be picked up at the close of the festival.

    Winners will be announced during the festival.

    Exhibition:

    4 Categories will be awarded, each will be judged by a panel of local ceramic artists. No explicit, political or inappropriate work will be included.

    Best of Show –Most creative, well-constructed wheel-thrown or hand-built ceramic work. Work may be functional or non-functional in nature. Entries will be judged on quality of construction, use of surface decoration, and overall creative design.

    Best Mug-Most creative, well-constructed wheel-thrown or hand-built mug. Entries will be judged on quality of construction, use of surface decoration, and overall creative design, as well as ergonomics.

    Best Sculptural Ceramic Work- Entries will be judged on quality of construction, use of surface decoration, and overall creative design. *For this category, entrants are advised to submit work that is reflective of the 2024 Art and Soul festival theme, Threads of Time. This theme is open for interpretation.

    People’s Choice Award: Voted by festival attendees’ votes. All entries to the Ceramic Arts exhibition will be automatically entered into the People’s Choice. Winner will be selected by number of votes received throughout the day, as voted by festival attendees.

    Live Pottery Olympics Competitions

    Judged by a panel of local ceramic artists. *The Pottery Olympics is not appropriate for beginners or unskilled contestants. Experienced ceramic potters should apply. There will be 4 LIVE Events judged. Number of contestants may be limited to space available. Register early to ensure that you will be included!

    Tallest Cylinder thrown on the wheel with 3 lbs. clay (15 min)

    Largest Bowl thrown on the wheel with 3 lbs. clay (15 min)

    Creative Creature/Hand-building (60 min)

    Most Creative hand-built ceramic creature made using 2 lbs. clay. Contestants may use slabs, coils, pinch pots, or any other hand-building techniques to create their creative clay creature.

    Blindfolded Throwing (30 min):

    Most creative Design created on the wheel, altered and completed in 30 min or less, while potters are blindfolded.

    Prizes:

    Winners in each category of the EXHIBITION AND POTTERY OLYMPICS will receive a $100 gift certificate to Daven’s Ceramics in Atlanta.

    The City of Thomaston will be hosting the 2nd Annual Plein Air Competition, as part of the 3rd Annual Thomaston Art & Soul Festival.

    Festival Theme: "Threads of Time"

    Day 1: Downtown Thomaston Prizes: 1st: $300, 2nd: $150, 3rd: $50

    Sketch of Downtown Thomaston between 2pm and 6pm. Judging will commence at 6:30pm

    Day 2: Greatest Generation Park: 1st: $300, 2nd: $150, 3rd: $50

    This will be a "Timed Paint Session" of anything of your choice at Greatest Generation Park beginning at 10am until 5:00pm. Judging will commence at 5:30 P.M. and winners will be announced shortly thereafter.

    Terms & Conditions

    This event is open to any artist (18 years or older) who paints using Plein Air techniques, in all fine art painting mediums (oils, acrylics, gouaches, watercolors, pastels, or pencils). Other mediums may be accepted upon prior approval.

    Artist must be on location in Downtown Thomaston by 4pm, during the offical Painting Period.

    No use of photography, photographic or computer equipment is allowed for painting plein air competition entries.

    All art must be created in the field (no studio work) and all surfaces (canvas, board, paper) must be stamped and authenticated at the Thomaston-Upson Arts Council (TUAC) building in Downtown Thomaston (201 S. Center Street) prior to painting.

    Artists may submit up to (1) painting.

    Artists assume all risk and liability for any artwork hung in and during the exhibit.

    All Plein Air entries must be submitted for judging by 5:00PM on Saturday April 20th. Judging will commence at 6:30PM.

    Artists must assign a selling price for their artwork, considering that TUAC will receive a 20% commission from the sales price. The sell of all artwork during the exhibit will be handled by the Thomaston-Upson Arts Council. However, you are not required to sell your work.

    Artwork will go on exhbit to the public at a Downtown Business (TBD) for up to 30 days. During this time, artwork will be available for puchase at TUAC. Artists are responsible for the pick-up of all artwork after the Plein Air exhibit, which ends after 30 days. The City of Thomaston, nor TUAC, will be responsible for any artwork left, not picked-up, or arranged for pickup. Any artwork left for more than 30 days becomes the property of TUAC.

    If you are missing something you need in order to paint or frame your artwork, TUAC may be able to assist you.

    Artists are responsible for their own transporation, lodging, and paint supplies. Paint supplies are available in a limited capacity, locally, so come prepared.

    The City of Thomaston, its employees, agents, contractors, sponsors, staff, volunteers, and the owners of property on which any activities take place, or where an artist paints, will not be responsible for any theft, loss, incident, accident, personal injury, or legal situations involving the artist, artwork, and/or personal property before, during, or after the competition.

    Artsists are responsible for providing any or all insurance to cover themselves, their artwork, and/or their property. This is not a requirement, but artists assume the risks associated with participation in the event.

    Artists will be assigned "Genral Areas" for painting. Artists are responsible in asking and receiving permission to paint on private property outside of the assigned areas.

    By participating in this competition, artists agree to follow these rules, behave as a professional, and conform to public and artistic ethics during the competition. Judges will have final discretion with respect to awards. The City of Thomaston reserves the right to adjudicate any work shown in the competition and sale.

    The First Annual Ritz Film awards will take place in the Historic Ritz theater of Thomaston Georgia.

    Awards & Prizes

    Winners and nominees will have the opportunity to broadcast their films on a national cable outlet.

    Rules & Terms

    Two categories are available for entrants, Student and Professional. Entrants who have been commissioned for film work but are still enrolled in a school will be eligible for the student submission category. Students will also need to submit a student id or proof of enrollment for eligibility.

    The Thomaston Short Film Festival accepts all genres of Short Films including but not limited to Narrative, Documentary, Experimental, and Animation.

    Submissions should be between 3:00-12:00 minutes in length.

    No Explicit material will be accepted, screened, or awarded.

    Student and Professional winners will receive Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards.

    When selecting winners judges will be analyzing the film in the areas of story, casting,

    character development, set design, cinematography, sound design and score, lighting, and

    originality.

    Film must include cast and crew credits.

    Entries should be submitted for preview as an online streaming video, either on FilmFreeway or via a password-protected streaming URL (such as Vimeo).

    Exhibition Formats should be a Digital File (.mp4 and/or .mov under 10GB)

    Entrants will be notified of their judging status by March 31st, 2024.

    By entering the festival, the entrant authorizes a public screening of the work in the festival and agrees to provide an exhibition copy for the period of the festival. Should the distribution rights for the work change by the time the festival takes place, it is still the responsibility of the entrant to provide an exhibition copy to the festival without charge.

    Once a film/tape is submitted for entry, it may not be withdrawn. Additionally, the entrant authorizes the festival to make copies of their preview copy for press use.

    Terms & Conditions

    Contestants will be required to submit printed photography for judging. Work must be 16x20 inches, no larger or smaller pieces will be accepted.

    All contestants must also submit a digital copy of their photo on or before April 13th for prejudging.

    Photographs must communicate the contest theme; Threads of Time.

    Prints should be either matted or in a frame. Pieces must be brought in before 2pm on Saturday, April 20th for public viewing. Judging will take place at 2pm, any entries afterward will not be considered for placement.

    There will be First, Second, and Third Place cash prize winners. A People’s Choice award will also be given to the photographer whose piece allotted the most votes from Art & Soul Festival attendees.

    NO DIGITAL VISUAL EFFECTS. Contestants MAY edit their picture in any way that does NOT include compositing unnatural imagery within the picture.     Prize- 1st: $250, 2nd: $100, 3rd: $50

    Terms & Conditions

    Your spoken word piece must be between 2-5 minutes in length.

    It must be your own creative writing. You may use quotes of other writers in your piece, but the whole thing cannot be plagiarized with copyrighted material of other authors.

    Your spoken word must connect art, soul, and community together in its content.

    Your spoken must be clean. Meaning no explicit lyrical expressions.

    You may use props, costumes, music, or anything that is feasible for the contest and stage presence.
